This is the most thorough version, suitable for purifying spaces, people, crystals, new homes, second-hand items, etc.
White Sage has much stronger energy than Palo Santo (Peruvian Holy Wood). It is specifically used to “expel negative energy, malevolent spirits, stagnant sickness energy, and residual energies from arguments,” which is why the ritual requires greater care and precision.
Traditional Native American White Sage Smudging Ceremony – Full Steps
-
Preparation of Tools
• One bundle of pure White Sage smudge stick
• Heat-resistant container: Traditionally an abalone shell (represents the Water element)
• Fire-starting tool: Wooden matches (most traditional), candle, or lighter
• A large feather or fan (represents the Air element, used to direct the smoke; your hand may be used instead)
• Optional: Place a small bowl of water (Water element) and a candle (Fire element) nearby. When all four elements are present, the energy is strongest.
-
Set Your Cleansing Intention (Extremely Important!)
Before lighting, place your hands together or speak aloud clearly and firmly:
“I call upon the spirit of White Sage to assist in removing all negative energy, sickness, malevolent spirits, and residual argument energy from this space / my body / this object. Let everything that does not serve the highest good leave immediately, leaving only love and light.”
The clearer and more resolute your intention, the stronger the result.
-
Light the White Sage
Use a match, candle, or lighter to ignite one end of the bundle. Let it burn for 30–60 seconds until a clear flame appears (White Sage is harder to light than Palo Santo and needs to burn longer).
-
Extinguish the Flame to Produce Thick White Smoke
Fan vigorously with your hand or feather until the flame goes out, leaving only glowing red embers and dense, rolling white smoke.
At this stage the scent will be sharp, pungent, and strongly herbal (unlike the sweet aroma of Palo Santo)—this is perfectly normal.
-
Begin the Cleansing (Order Is Very Important)
A. Cleanse Yourself First (Always start with your own body)
• Start at the soles of your feet, allowing the smoke to rise and envelop: feet → calves → knees → thighs → genitals → abdomen → heart/chest → arms → neck → face → top of the head
• Finally turn around so the smoke reaches your back and the back of your head
• You may say while smudging: “All energy that is not mine, leave now!”
B. Cleanse the Space (Move from the innermost area toward the door)
• Begin in the deepest part of the home (or the farthest corner of a room)
• Walk counter-clockwise (symbolizes unbinding, releasing, and banishing)
• Pause for 10–20 seconds especially in these areas:
– All corners (negative energy accumulates most here)
– Doorways and windows (provides an exit for negative energy)
– Head of the bed, couches, places where arguments often happen
– In front of mirrors (mirrors easily trap spirit entities)
• While walking, declare aloud or silently: “All negative energy, malevolent spirits, and sickness, leave this space immediately!”
C. Cleanse Objects
Completely envelop second-hand furniture, crystals, tarot/oracle cards, amulets, etc., in the smoke for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute.
-
Closing the Ritual
• Firmly press the glowing embers into the abalone shell or heat-resistant container until completely extinguished (you’ll hear a hissing sound)
• Offer gratitude: “Thank you, White Sage and the spirits of the Four Elements, for your assistance. This cleansing ceremony is now complete.”
• Open windows and ventilate for 20–30 minutes so the banished energies can fully depart.
White Sage vs. Palo Santo – Most Powerful Combined Sequence
- First use White Sage to banish negative energy (counter-clockwise)
-
Then use Palo Santo to invite positive energy (clockwise)
← This is the most complete and traditional cleansing method.
When finished, you will clearly feel the entire space become lighter, brighter, and quieter; many people even notice the temperature rise by 1–2 degrees. This is the true power of White Sage.
Wishing you a smooth and successful cleansing, and may your home be filled with peace, safety, and joy~
